Klarus XT12R Tactical Flashlight Review: 500 Meters of Throw

Klarus XT12R Tactical Flashlight Review: 500 Meters of Throw - Good Nite Gear

The Klarus XT12R is one of the best tactical flashlights you can buy for $60. It throws a beam roughly 500 meters, puts out 2,000 lumens on turbo, and uses one of the fastest, simplest switch layouts in its class.

If the name sounds familiar, it should. The original Klarus XT12 helped make the dual tail switch famous. It has been discontinued for years, and the XT12R is its modern replacement: more output, more throw, built-in USB-C charging, and the same intuitive control layout.

We put the XT12R through our standard testing for the Urban Survivor YouTube channel. Here is how it performed, who it's for, and where it falls short.

Klarus XT12R - Good Nite Gear

Beam Profile: Built to Throw

The XT12R is a thrower first and a general-purpose light second. It pairs a cool white tint with a tight, intense hotspot and a fairly compact flood.

Cool white is standard on tactical lights. It looks punchy at distance and gives good contrast for spotting shapes and movement. The trade-off is color accuracy: foliage and skin tones can look a little washed out compared with a neutral tint.

The tight hotspot is excellent for identifying things far away. But with the light pointed straight ahead, you won't see as much right at your feet. Two easy fixes: angle the light slightly downward so more spill hits the ground, or run a higher mode so bounce light fills in your near field.

Output Modes Tested

High (Turbo): 2,000 Lumens, ~500 Meters

Turbo delivers 2,000 lumens and about 63,000 candela, which works out to roughly 500 meters of throw. That's impressive for a single-18650 light this size.

The rated 2.5-hour runtime needs context. Like every high-output light in this class, the XT12R holds 2,000 lumens only briefly, then steps down to manage heat and protect the battery. Most of that runtime comes from the lower stepped-down level. Treat turbo as a burst tool: light up a tree line, check a noise across a field, then drop back down.

Medium: 300 Lumens, ~200 Meters

Medium puts out 300 lumens and about 10,000 candela, for roughly 200 meters of throw and around 6 hours of runtime. This is the mode most people will live in. It's plenty for walking the property, hiking, or working around a vehicle, without the heat buildup of turbo.

Low: 30 Lumens, ~60 Meters

Low drops to 30 lumens and about 900 candela, yet still reaches around 60 meters. That's the reflector at work: a focused beam pushes even a small amount of light a long way. Runtime stretches to roughly 48 hours, which makes low ideal for map reading, camp chores, or power outages when you don't know when you can recharge.

Strobe

Strobe runs at the full 2,000 lumens. It's intense and disorienting, useful for signaling, drawing attention in an emergency, or creating space in a threatening situation.

Build Quality, Reflector, and Strike Bezel

The XT12R's range comes from a high-performance LED paired with Klarus's deep, smooth Efusion reflector, which produces that tight hotspot.

Klarus XT12R - Good Nite Gear

Up front is an aggressive stainless steel strike bezel with three high-hardness silicon nitride bead inlays, effective for striking or breaking glass in an emergency. The body is 6061-T6 aircraft-grade aluminum with military-grade anodizing. It's IPX8 rated for submersion to 2 meters for 60 minutes, impact rated to 1.5 meters, and built with a shock-resistant design. In hand it feels dense and solid, ready for a truck, bug-out bag, or duty belt.

TacMaster Switch: Instant Turbo, Zero Guesswork

Klarus's TacMaster dual tail switch is the XT12R's standout feature. It's fast, simple, and easy to run by feel.

  • Main tail switch: turns the light on and off, and a single press goes straight to turbo. No cycling through modes.
  • Auxiliary switch: a single press cycles low, medium, and high. Press and hold for strobe.

After a minute of handling, it becomes second nature. That matters when your hands are cold, you're moving, or your heart rate is up.

Battery and Charging

The XT12R ships with a Klarus-branded 3.6V button-top 18650 rated at 3,600mAh, on the high end for 18650 capacity and a big reason the runtimes are solid.

It also runs on two CR123A batteries, a smart backup since CR123As store well for years, though max output is lower on them. The built-in USB-C port charges the light from empty to full in about 5 hours.

Who it's for: anyone who wants long-range reach, a durable build, and a no-nonsense tactical interface on a budget, including hunters, property owners, security professionals, and preparedness-minded buyers. If you mostly need a close-range walking light, a floodier light may suit you better.

Final Verdict

The Klarus XT12R is one of the strongest tactical throwers under $60. It knows exactly what it is: a long-range, hard-use light with an interface that works under stress.

If you want to identify things across a field, down a long driveway, or along a shoreline, it does that extremely well for its size and price. The only real caveat is the tight beam, so pick something floodier if close-range walking is your main use. For everyone else, the XT12R is a worthy successor to the original XT12.
