Drone detection has become one of the most common questions we get from law enforcement, security, and surveillance customers: which viewing mode actually works best when you need to spot a small drone at distance? Specs on a page only tell you so much, so we ran a real-world test — flying a DJI Mini SE and cycling through all four viewing modes on the GNG GF31 Thermal Fusion Binocular (640x512 thermal sensor) to see which held up.
The Test
Using 4x GF31 unit, we tracked the same drone across four modes:
- Night Vision
- Thermal
- Thermal Fusion
- Thermal Outline
Same drone, same flight path, same conditions — the only variable was the viewing mode.
The Results
Thermal Fusion performed best at range. The blended thermal-plus-detail image kept the drone visible and trackable well past the point where other modes started losing it — the advantage of thermal fusion technology is exactly this: it gives you the heat signature to catch small, fast-moving targets while retaining enough visual context to keep track of them.
Pure Thermal was a close second. The raw heat signature of the drone's motor and battery held up nearly as well as thermal fusion, losing only a little clarity at the outer edge of detection range.
Night Vision and Thermal Outline mode both fell off noticeably as range increased. Night vision relies on ambient light and reflected detail, which a small drone doesn't offer much of at distance. Thermal outline mode, while useful in close-range scenarios for isolating a heat source's shape, lost definition on a fast-moving, small target well before thermal or thermal fusion did.
Why This Matters
For anyone using thermal optics for drone detection — whether that's perimeter security, law enforcement counter-drone operations, or general surveillance — this test is a reminder that not all viewing modes are created equal for every use case. If range is your priority, thermal fusion and pure thermal are the modes to lean on. Night vision and outline mode still have their place, but range isn't where they shine.
See It In Action
We filmed the full side-by-side comparison — check out the video to see exactly how each mode performed against the same drone at the same distances.
The entire test was filmed on the GNG GF31 Thermal Fusion Binocular, our 640x512 thermal fusion unit built for exactly this kind of long-range detection work.
